Berlin-based designer Svenja Specht is the creative force behind the line Reality Studio. TOC is excited to present the new SS13 collection, but thought we should get a few words from Svenja to help kick things off.

TOC: What was the inspiration for the season?

SS: This time Reality Studios expedition lead us to Portugal. We spent one month in North Portugal because of research. We were very impressed by the landscape, food, resources and traditions. There we met `Colonia´, a design team, in their wonderful studio & micro gallery in Porto and we became friends. I asked them if they would be up for a collaboration with Reality Studio - and they were. The result is the Cubo Print that has its basis in Portuguese tridimensional tiles. The pattern cubic forms, turned into containers for a lush garden which explode across the fabric. The fabrics are mainly from Italy & France some from Portugal. Normally we visit fabric producers or fabric fairs to find them. Sometimes we can add some handcrafted fabrics if we are lucky.

TOC: Tell us something about living and working in Berlin.

SS: Living in Berlin is like being on a sailboat. You can be totally calm and by yourself, but then all of a sudden many things are happening around you and you get so many influences and inspirations. The winters are hard and the summers short but beautiful. Food is not one of the highlights but the entertainment factor is very high! When you are landing you should take your bike and explore the city by bike - that’s wonderful!

A highlight of our trip to Milan for the Salone was a visit to Achille Castiglioni’s atelier. Been thinking a lot about the way that space informs both process and output. Castiglioni’s penchant for tinkering with everyday forms is clearly in evidence in the studio.
